The chaotic 2025 NFL Draft is over, meaning attention can begin to turn toward June’s NBA Draft, which is highlighted by Duke’s Cooper Flagg and Rutgers’ superstar duo.
The Philadelphia 76ers are in one of the league’s most nerve-wracking situations, as if their pick ends up in the top six, it’s kept, but if it falls outside of that range, the selection goes to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Odds are in the favor of Philadelphia keeping it with a 10.5% chance of landing the No. 1 pick, only trailing the Utah Jazz (14%), Washington Wizards (14%), Charlotte Hornets (14%), and New Orleans Pelicans (12.5%).
CBS Sports’ Cameron Salerno predicts the Sixers to hold steady at No. 5 and choose Texas guard Tre Johnson after Flagg, Dylan Harper, VJ Edgecombe, and Ace Bailey hypothetically go off the board.
“Johnson was one of the best pure scorers in college basketball. He is the best prospect out of the University of Texas since Kevin Durant went No. 2 overall in the 2007 NBA Draft,” Salerno wrote. “If the 76ers are on the clock and Johnson is on the board, they shouldn’t hesitate to select him despite already having their backcourt of the future in Tyrese Maxey and Jared McCain.”
Salerno pointed out the most obvious dilemma with this proposed selection. Philadelphia already has one of the NBA’s most promising young backcourts in Maxey and McCain. The former is an All-Star and Most Improved Player award winner, while the latter had a stellar rookie campaign cut short due to injury.
From a fit perspective, it would be much more logical for Sixers team president Daryl Morey to select a frontcourt player, such as Derik Queen, Kon Kneuppel, or Khaman Maluach.
